Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve — also known as Wakarawatte or "Walker's Estate" — is a 270-acre natural forest on the outskirts of Kandy, offering peaceful walking trails through rich flora with views back over the ancient royal city.
The reserve sits on a prominent ridge overlooking Kandy city, making it a favourite for both early-morning walkers and birdwatchers. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife including porcupines, monkeys, giant squirrels, and over 80 recorded bird species.
Well-maintained trails wind through towering trees, bamboo groves and flowering shrubs. The main loop takes approximately two to three hours at a leisurely pace, with several viewpoints offering panoramic vistas across the Kandy valley.
The reserve is easily accessible from Coffee Bungalow by tuk-tuk or car in under 20 minutes, making it an ideal morning excursion before returning for breakfast or high coffee.
